I eat, therefore I am (the holistic view on food)

Food represents our primordial cultural code and is related not only to simple nutrition but also to the social environment, and reflects our cultural identity, customs and tradition. Is it possible for us to take control over this primitive impulse, so to avoid becoming slave to it? Food is medicine, as shown by Hippocrates, Galen and Paracelsus already long ago. If it is true, why can’t we look at what we eat as a short- or long-term wellness generator, beside being a means to satisfy our taste?

vegetablesFood modulates our infinite mental indices that are involved also in dietary disorders such as obesity. If we go in depth into this common condition affecting modern Western world we prompt realize that the excessive food consumption is caused by the overwhelming and attracting food offer – that could mislead “hunger and satiety” mechanisms – along with the lack of a “culture of wellness” which would include the culture of fitness, of exercise and of health-oriented practices.

The deepest soul issues fidget in the inner of our body: suffering from obesity in a society that privileges slim people represents a not too concealed social exclusion! For this reason, all the  disciplines aimed at “saving our souls” by chagrin or fasting have been re-introduced in eating plans based on food moderation, which seem like ways to save our identity and help our chances to be accepted,  rather than a regime to guarantee our body wellness.

The stakes aren’t so much a food reconciliation rather the real act of existing: a person who eats to exist and wants to get slimmer for the same reason is walking on the razor’s edge. Most slimming diets fail for the lack of self-confidence rather than a weak resistance to the temptation of gluttony. When food becomes a matter of existence it is given a bigger meaning than it can actually hold.

The motto “mens sana in corpore sano” (a sound mind in a sound body) should not only be intended literally: Juvenal did not state that in a healthy body lies a sound mind but that both body and mind need to be exercised in the same way. The idea that both body and mind could grow up and develop only together is also the basis of the pedagogic school model proposed by Aristotle.

Nowadays such a precept broadens its meaning in a more complex way: in order to have good soul authority we need a healthy body power (and vice versa) by virtue of the psychophysical unit.  Such a psychophysical unit is indeed the subject of the holistic sciences: every medicine, science and art that considers the human being in his entirety of body, mind and soul could be regarded as holistic. Like ecology – which deals with the global Earth and environment protection – holistic medicine focuses on the global health of the human being.

fitnessTaking care of ourselves becomes a sum of multiple actions: feeding ourselves in more natural and unpolluted ways, purifying our own feelings from negative thoughts, understanding the deep reasons of our actions, and eventually progressing both humanely and spiritually.

Stepping from a model of Nature that can provide remedies to every medical need, at BeC we’ve been inspired by traditional Eastern medicine and we’ve been trying to conjugate the ancient phytotherapeutic traditions with modern scientific research, in the constant effort to gain better and synergic results. In line with the holistic view, every dietary supplements by BeC is designed for the global wellness of the human being, hence they are not merely directed toward one single need.

If we consider that body organs are correlated one the other, then a specific focus on a single issue – ignoring the surrounding condition –  would be too superficial! For these reasons all dietary supplements by BeC are composed by complex and equilibrated mixtures providing with optimal bioavailability of nutrients, efficacy and nutritional value. Thanks to their particular composition, they could be chosen by people on different eating plans such as vegetarian, vegan,  low fat, low salt, low sugar diet. In order to maintain good health conditions it is necessary to take care of ourselves in whole: not only by regular fitness, equilibrated and well-balanced diet (in terms of proteins, carbohydrates and fats) but also by supplementing our diet with the right intake of those vitamins, minerals and micronutrients that are essential for our wellbeing. Unfortunately, more and more often such micronutrients are lacking in common diets, due to wrong storing condition of foodstuffs and prolonged cooking time.

Natural remedies against excessive water retention

Swollen legs, tiredness, tingling and water retention are common circulation problems for men and women. Beside being initially beauty problems, they can implicate several concerns. Several systematic causes can determine excessive water retention in tissues: long working hours in up-right position, a sedentary lifestyle, an excessive salt consumption, some kidney disorders,  uncomfortable shoes, high toxins stocking, drug abuse…

depurplus_collageWe can adopt several precautions to overcome these problems: during summertime we should tonify our legs with jets of cold water or enjoy frequent footbaths to reactivate slow blood circulation that can cause oedema and water retention. Further suggestions include lymphatic draining massages and frequent exercise, with a special recommendation for a genuine healthy diet. Drinking a lot of water will help stimulate tissue drainage, which should be associated to increased intake of antioxidants and vitamins – i.e. vitamin C and E, Zinc and Copper with flavonoids of Cranberry – that will contribute by protecting peripheral circulation.

Among natural remedies, diet supplement Depur Plus – which contains the above mentioned ingredients –  is designed to support the physiologic activity of the urinary tract, helping eliminate the residues of metabolic pathways and assure liquid and ionic equilibrium of our organism.

Active ingredients extracted from Cranberry act protecting and reducing inflammatory processes: they help maintain healthy kidneys and prevent the onset of infections.[1] Such an activity is strengthened by the components of Birch, a natural salicilates-rich plant with antioxidant properties,[2] along with the essential oils of Caraway, Cajeput and Juniper.

Depur PlusIn order to favour kidney function and natural purification, several other botanical extracts endowed with known diuretic properties are includedGoldenrodJava TeaMouse Ear hawkweed and Dandelion favour liquids drainage and the urinary function, and contribute to reduce liquid stasis. Moreover, dandelion extract, endowed with choleretic properties, stimulates digestion and diuresis, especially when extra detoxification is needed. The very ancient Equisetum plant, known since ages for the diuretic action, is able to accumulate special minerals in the tissues (i.e. Silicates)  to protect against pathogens’ attacks. Thanks to such ability in restore minerals, Equisetum has been used for a long time in traditional medicine for treating several bone disorder[3] and it is recommended as draining agent that will not decrease physiologic mineral stocks in our body.

Depur Plus takes care of body wellness, protects and favours normal kidney function and it could be “our ally for beauty” against liquid retention and aesthetic problems caused by cellulite. It can also complement wellness massage treatments to obtain more rapid and more satisfying results!!

Tired and stressed during springtime? Let’s get back strength and energy from Nature!

We have all been waiting for the good season to enjoy longer days and the pleasure of sunshine, but, along with good weather, spring brings tiredness, sleepiness, irritability, fatigue, difficulty to stay focused: typical seasonal discomforts. If the problem has no biological causes and is just the consequence of spring, one can seek help from diet supplements, rich in oligo-elements and standardized vegetable extracts, to guarantee the correct daily “re-charge” to our body, along with the proper nutritional intake. Diet supplements are not meant to replace a proper diet, but to contribute to the correct balance of those nutrients that can sometimes be lacking, or that we might need to have more, in specific periods. Indeed, diet supplements can help us live better!

vitalmenteVital Mente, thanks to its composition, is suited for all the states of mental and psycho-physical fatigue and to improve peripheral microcirculation. Therefore, it is particularly suited to this period of the year. It can also be a valid help in case of tiredness associated to the change of season, or to intense work, and it can help students approach semester’s tests and final examinations, in case they feel their memory needs some support.

According to the herbal tradition, many plants can serve as remedies for tiredness. Among them Ginseng, a long used remedy in traditional eastern medicine for its ability to “energize” both mind and body, to increase physical strength and prevent ageing. These properties have recently been supported by modern research, which attributes to Ginseng a stimulating activity on cerebral function with an improvement of the learning ability and reduction of memory loss[1]. The capacity to better manage fatigue and give positive response to stress is the basis of the activity of plants defined as “adaptogens”, among which we find Eleutherococcus, also called Siberian Ginseng, for which recent studies highlight the ability to support brain function and memory[2]. Eleutherococcus acts in sinergy with Ginkgo biloba and Centella, which also are investigated for their ability to protect brain function, particularly form age-related decline[3]. Vitamin C and Vitamin E, along with Zinc and Selenium, protect cells from oxidative stress, aiding the function of the immune system. Active principles of Blueberry give relief to “heavy legs” and, together with Centella, Ginkgo biloba[4] and Zinc, they protect the eye function.

vitalmenteVitamins and minerals, particularly B-group vitamins, contained in Vital Mente are fundamental nutrients to overcome fatigue and difficulty to focus. Indeed, such nutritional factors decrease tiredness by regulating the physiological mechanisms that bring to a fuller metabolism of macro-nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats), favoring the conversion of food into energy. They also express a protective activity on nervous system, together with minerals like Magnesium, Copper and Zinc, which eventually aid the cognitive function, i.e. the ability to learn and elaborate.

With the help from all these combined nutrients, we can safely overcome fatigue and stressing times, as well as periods of most intense study.
